Langer Johann, High-rise building in Erlangen, Germany
Langer Johann is a residential tower rising 27 stories to 80 meters in height and serving as a housing complex in Erlangen. The structure combines two apartment blocks around a central elevator shaft, containing 384 residential units with loggias or terraces alongside 16 commercial spaces in nearby lower buildings.
Construction of this residential complex took place between 1969 and 1973 under the direction of architects Hanns and Heinz Scherzer. Its completion marked a major phase in Erlangen's post-war urban development.
The name came from a public competition in 1972 and refers to the St. Johann neighborhood where this building stands as a local landmark. Residents and visitors recognize it immediately because of how it looks and where it sits in the city.
The building is easy to spot from outside and the commercial spaces in nearby lower structures are accessible on foot. Its location in St. Johann provides convenient access to other parts of the city.
A 2001 facade renovation transformed the original yellow concrete exterior into a stepped color pattern of red, yellow, blue, and green. This color change makes the building visually distinctive and sets it apart from other structures of its era.
