Limeseum, Archaeological museum near Roman fort site in Ruffenhofen, Germany
The Limeseum is an archaeological museum beside a Roman military fort near Ruffenhofen and presents artifacts, weapons, and building components from the ancient frontier wall. The site includes exhibition halls and a 40-hectare open-air area with the remains of the former cavalry fort.
The location served as a Roman cavalry fort starting in 100 AD and functioned as a border post for roughly 160 years to secure against Germanic tribes. The museum opened in 2012 to document the importance of this frontier fortification along the ancient Limes frontier.
The exhibition reveals how Roman soldiers lived and worked at this frontier post, featuring reconstructed living spaces and artifacts from excavations. Visitors can see in the display cases what everyday items the soldiers used and how their quarters were arranged.
The grounds are easily accessible and provide visitors with audio guides in various languages along with regular guided tours. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the paths cross excavated areas and can become slippery when wet.
The museum grounds feature a scale model of the Roman cavalry fort where building positions are marked through specific vegetation patterns. This innovative approach lets visitors recognize the exact layout of the fortification on the original ground.
