Lloyd Passage, Covered shopping arcade in Bremen-Mitte, Germany.
Lloyd Passage is a covered arcade running approximately 250 meters through central Bremen, connecting Sögestraße with Hanseatenhof. A glass roof equipped with heliostats directs natural daylight deep into the interior, creating a naturally lit shopping environment.
Construction took place between 1987 and 1990, making this Germany's first covered public street of its kind. The structure was named after the Norddeutscher Lloyd headquarters that once stood on this location, reflecting the shipping company's historical importance to the city.
The passage displays handprints of notable figures connected to Bremen embedded in bronze plates along the floor since 2003. Walking through, visitors encounter these small tributes scattered throughout the space.
The heliostat-equipped roof ensures the passage remains well-lit throughout the day, even on overcast conditions. The space stays accessible during special events like the annual Christmas market, which operates with extended hours.
The passage was built on the former site of Norddeutscher Lloyd headquarters, a shipping company that put Bremen on the global maritime map. Today, visitors recognize this maritime past only through the arcade's name.
