Maxhütte, Former ironworks in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany

The Maxhütte is a shuttered ironworks in Sulzbach-Rosenberg with preserved blast furnaces and production buildings from the industrial era. The complex shows the facilities and structures needed for large-scale iron manufacturing.

The ironworks was founded in 1851 and grew into a major operation for iron production in the region. It ended in 2002 after operating continuously for over 150 years.

The site takes its name from a former owner and shows today how workers labored daily at enormous metal furnaces. The buildings and machinery tell the story of life for those who made iron here.

The site is located near the Czech border and is reachable by public transport or car. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to explore multiple areas of the large grounds.

The third blast furnace of the site remains intact and shows the exact building methods of 19th-century German ironworks architecture. Visitors can recognize at this massive structure the techniques that generations of iron makers used.
