Maria Königin des Friedens, Catholic parish church in Obergiesing, Munich, Germany
Maria Königin des Friedens is a parish church in the Obergiesing district featuring a 66-meter-long nave with narrow tall windows and a 43-meter tower clad in conglomerate stone. The building measures 23 meters wide and follows modern architectural principles characteristic of the New Building movement.
The building was constructed in 1935 and consecrated in 1937 by Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber. Following wartime damage, reconstruction in 1946 restored the church to its current form.
The altar area displays a fresco of the Madonna with Child and two angels that emphasizes the liturgical focus. The entrance door features a relief sculpture by Karl Knappe that greets visitors as they enter.
Regular services take place throughout the week with a Sunday Mass at 11:00. Three organs accompany the worship services and create an impressive acoustic experience within the interior space.
The original design called for Saint Thomas More as patron saint, but this was changed to avoid conflicts with Nazi authorities. The renaming to Queen of Peace reflects the complicated history of that era.
