Luna Park Hamburg-Altona, Entertainment park in Altona, Hamburg, Germany
Luna Park Hamburg-Altona was a large leisure facility that offered amusement rides, a dance hall, a swimming pool, and exhibition halls on its grounds. The infrastructure was modern for its time and attracted visitors from across the region.
The facility opened in 1913 and was Germany's largest amusement venue at that time. The outbreak of World War I in 1914 led to its quick closure.
The park was shaped by Danish architects Juul Brask and Elnar Rosenstand, whose designs brought simplified Baroque forms into the layout. This architectural touch still influences how people think about leisure space design today.
The site now houses sports facilities and is surrounded by residential buildings and shops in the Altona area. There is a playground on site that preserves the former park's legacy through its name.
The project was financed by the Lunapark-Gesellschaft under Hugo Smidt, who leased multiple land parcels for development. This financing structure was unusual for the time and showed the entrepreneurial spirit of that era.
