Die Reit, Protected nature area in Bergedorf, Germany
Die Reit is a protected nature area in Bergedorf featuring reed beds, willow thickets, and flowering meadows that reflect its past use for brick manufacturing. The site lies between two branches of the Elbe River and provides a varied habitat for many bird species.
The area was used for brick manufacturing starting in 1883, which fundamentally reshaped the landscape and created ponds and varied terrain. Once this activity ended, the land was protected in 1973 and developed into an important bird refuge.
The research station has been a center for bird observation and ringing since 1973, drawing ornithologists from around the world. Visitors can witness the work of scientists documenting bird movements and see how people use natural spaces to protect wildlife.
Access is limited and requires advance registration with the research station, especially if you want to explore special areas. The best time to visit is during the bird migration seasons when the most species are present.
The location serves as a stopover for millions of migratory birds that refuel here before moving on. This makes it a critical point in the routes of birds traveling between different continents.
