Fischteiche in der Lewitz, Nature reserve with fish ponds in Lewitz, Germany
Fischteiche in der Lewitz is a protected area consisting of interconnected ponds and water bodies spread across several municipalities. The landscape features shallow waters, reed beds, and open wetland areas that create varied habitats for wildlife.
The site developed from 1897 onwards when fish farming was expanded and numerous ponds were constructed. This water system replaced earlier cleared land that had been deforested centuries before for iron ore smelting operations.
The ponds serve as breeding and feeding grounds for numerous bird species that inhabit the area. Visitors often see raptors, waterfowl, and other birds using the water and shorelines throughout the seasons.
An observation tower at Dütschower Bridge offers good views of the ponds and the birds that inhabit them. Access to the water bodies themselves is limited to protect the habitat, but walking paths allow you to explore the surrounding areas.
The area forms part of one of Europe's largest bird protection zones and attracts thousands of birds especially during migration seasons. White-tailed eagles and other raptors, once absent from the region, now return here regularly to hunt and rest.
