Märchenbrunnen, Fairy tale fountain in Wuppertal, Germany
The Märchenbrunnen is a monument featuring around 106 stone sculptures spread across an area of approximately 34 by 54 meters with cascading waterfalls and multiple water displays. The structure combines substantial stonework with flowing water across a generous plaza space.
Construction began in 1897 following designs by architect Ludwig Hoffmann and sculptor Wilhelm Albermann, reaching completion in 1913. The project emerged during a period of significant urban growth and aimed to showcase the cultural importance of fairy tales in society.
The fountain depicts scenes from German fairy tales such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and Little Red Riding Hood through detailed stone carvings. Visitors walk past these familiar stories brought to life in sculptural form.
A protective fence surrounds the monument to preserve its condition and prevent damage to the historical stones. The area is easily accessible and offers space to walk around and view the sculptures from different angles.
The restoration work in 2005 employed digital 3D modeling of historical photographs to recreate lost sculptures using aluminum castings. This approach allowed conservators to maintain the original appearance while using modern materials for durability.
