Otto von Bahrenpark, Cultural heritage monument and neighborhood in Bahrenfeld, Altona district, Germany.
Otto von Bahrenpark is a former gasworks site in Altona featuring red brick buildings, flat gable roofs, and large arched windows from the 19th century. The grounds now contain roughly 250 apartments, offices, shops, hotels, restaurants, and a fitness center arranged around a central green space with a retention basin.
The site originated as a gasworks built between 1892 and 1895, producing fuel for Hamburg until 1938. After the facility closed, the property underwent redevelopment into a mixed-use residential and commercial area.
The site takes its name from a merchant of the 19th century and displays a mix of preserved red brick structures alongside contemporary residential buildings. Visitors can see how old factory halls serve as cafes, galleries, or offices, bringing activity to the former industrial grounds.
The site is easy to explore on foot with wide, well-paved paths between buildings. The central green area with the water basin invites visitors to spend time there and offers shelter under the arcades even on rainy days.
Between 1999 and 2000, more than 150,000 tons of contaminated soil were removed from the site before transformation could be completed. This extensive remediation work lies hidden beneath the green spaces and pathways that visitors see today.
