Phoenix-See, Lake in Hörde district, Germany.
Phoenix-See is an artificial lake in the Hörde district of Dortmund, Germany. The water body is surrounded by wide paths for walkers and cyclists, with lawns and low trees offering shade in many spots.
The Phoenix ironworks produced steel and iron from 1847 and closed its gates for good in 2001. On the disused industrial site the lake was then created, laid out and filled with water between 2005 and 2011.
The name Phoenix recalls the old steelworks and points to the rebirth of the site after the iron industry ended. Today you see sailors on the water and joggers along the shore paths who use the place as part of their everyday routine.
The lake is freely accessible in any season and can be walked or cycled around comfortably. The paths are mostly flat and paved, making it easier to move with a stroller or wheelchair.
At one stretch of the shore stands the old Thomas converter from the steel era, a rusty industrial giant preserved as a monument. This converter recalls that raw iron was once transformed into steel here before water replaced the factory halls.
