Alter Posthof, historische Poststation
The Old Posthof is a complex of several buildings from different periods in Lieser that has been carefully restored. Constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries, the structures are arranged around a quiet courtyard, with the main post building from around 1600 serving as the centerpiece.
The Posthof was established in the early 16th century and served as an important hub in the Holy Roman Empire's postal system until around 1676. After declining in the 18th century, the buildings were converted into residences and storage until they were carefully restored in modern times.
The Old Posthof served as a vital meeting point for travelers and mail carriers crossing through the region. Visitors today can sense this historical role by walking through the restored spaces and imagining the movement of people and messages that once passed through this location.
The site is centrally located in Lieser and easily accessible on foot or by bicycle. Free parking is available about 100 meters away, and proximity to local shops, restaurants, and hiking trails makes it a good starting point for exploring the region.
Under the direction of postmaster Philipp Umbescheiden in the 17th century, the Posthof became a trusted center for postal relations between Vienna and Western Europe. His work during the Thirty Years' War helped maintain communication despite widespread military conflicts in the region.
