St. Marien

St. Marien is a three-nave brick hall church with cross vaults that extends roughly 70 meters long and reaches about 14 meters in height. The building shows typical Brick Gothic features with a prominent tower that rises above the city's roofline.

Construction began around 1270, shortly after Friedland was founded in 1244, with the tower foundation laid first. The building went through several construction phases over centuries that shaped its final form.

The interior reflects Baroque designs that developed after a major fire destroyed much of the city in 1703. You will notice ornate altars, decorative elements, and furnishings that shaped the spiritual life of many generations.

The church is usually accessible since it serves as an active place of worship with regular visiting hours for guests. Be aware that services may temporarily limit access at certain times.

The tower spire took its current form between 1877 and 1889 with an octagonal steep peak that has defined the city's appearance since then. This distinctive feature makes the tower instantly recognizable from afar.
