The Werbellinsee Youth Recreation and Meeting Center is a large recreational complex situated directly on the lake with numerous buildings for different activities. The grounds include dormitory buildings, sports facilities, theater and cinema spaces, and a library building, all spread across an expansive woodland setting.
The site was established in 1952 following the model of the Soviet Artek camp, which served as the inspiration for socialist youth training. The grounds became known as a place for cultural exchange and recreation within East Germany.
The center served as a meeting place where young people from socialist countries gathered together during the Cold War period. Visitors can still sense how this space was designed to bring different youth from across the Eastern Bloc together.
The complex is situated directly on the lake with good access from Berlin and the surrounding region and offers various accommodations for different group sizes. The expansive woodland setting makes the grounds suitable for exploring, with the different buildings connected by marked pathways.
The grounds preserve an authentic Mongolian yurt gifted by visitors from international delegations during the East German period. This structure demonstrates the far-reaching connections the site maintained with countries beyond Europe.
