Reese-Barracks, Military barracks in Kriegshaber district, Augsburg, Germany.
The Reese-Barracks form a military complex in the Kriegshaber district that spreads across a large site with numerous structures and extensive green spaces. The former Officers Club building now houses Kulturhaus Abraxas, while the broader grounds contain various buildings and landscaped areas supporting contemporary uses.
The military facility was built by the Wehrmacht in the 1930s and remained largely intact after World War II despite the destruction around it. The U.S. Army subsequently occupied the complex, which eventually transitioned to civilian and cultural purposes.
The site functions as Kulturpark West today, hosting artist studios, music rehearsal spaces, and venues for cultural events. Visitors can encounter creators at work and attend the various performances and exhibitions that activate the grounds throughout the year.
The site is accessible to visitors, allowing people to walk through and explore the various areas and buildings at their own pace. You can plan several hours to properly experience the different spaces and any cultural activities taking place across the grounds.
The complex actually formed from the merger of three separate military facilities that originally had different names before being unified under one designation. This name honors an American soldier who received the Medal of Honor for his military service.
