Regener See, reservoir in Germany
Regener See is a reservoir near Regen in Bavaria, created by damming the Schwarzer Regen river to control flooding and generate electricity. The lake sits in a narrow valley surrounded by green hills, with water depths reaching up to 7 meters (23 feet) near the dam.
The lake was created in 1954 and 1955 by damming the Schwarzer Regen river to provide flood protection and power generation. The hydroelectric plant began operating in 1955 and has been privately owned since 1981, continuing to supply electricity to the surrounding area.
The lake is woven into daily life in Regen, where locals come to relax by the water and enjoy quiet moments. Fishing, walking along the shore, and sitting on benches are common ways people spend time here, treating the place as a simple refuge from busy streets.
The paths around the lake are easy to walk and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Parking spots are small and limited nearby, so plan ahead, and bring your own snacks or water for a longer visit since there are no major facilities.
The lake hosted the European Championship for ice stock sports in 1961, a sport similar to curling played with ice blocks. When winter temperatures drop low enough, visitors can watch the water freeze and occasionally see people skating on the ice.
