St. Johannis

St. Johannis is a Gothic church building in Schönebeck with two prominent towers and a three-nave hall whose polygonal apse is supported by seventeen buttresses. The architecture displays late Gothic features in its spatial structure and structural design.

The church was founded in 1430 when the foundation stone was laid on the west side, and the building process extended over more than one hundred years. The long construction period reflects the gradual realization of the Gothic design.

The baroque interior displays a high altar from 1665 showing sacred figures and a carved pulpit by Maximilian Dreißigmark mounted on gilded palm wood. These furnishings shape the character of the worship space today.

The building is periodically open for tower climbs, especially during summer months, from which visitors can enjoy views across Schönebeck. Guests should check in advance about specific opening times and accessibility.

The two towers were originally planned to reach the height of Magdeburg Cathedral, but archiepiscopal restrictions limited them to half the intended height. This compromise shaped the church's appearance to this day.
