Schloss Albeck

Schloss Albeck is a fortress complex standing at the southern edge of Floztal Valley, north of Ulm. The buildings display elements from various periods and are now used in part as residential spaces.

Duke Frederick I of Swabia ordered construction of this fortress between 1081 and 1100 to secure the border against the Welf-controlled city of Ulm. This was a key part of territorial power struggles in the region at that time.

The fortress served as the seat of the Lords of Albeck and still shapes the town's character with its stone presence today. Visitors can see the structures that reflect this medieval lordship.

The site sits on elevated terrain with good views over the surrounding area, making it accessible from various directions. Visitors should note that parts of the complex are privately used and not freely accessible.

During the Princes' Uprising of 1552, the garrison refused to surrender, a decision that earned the Brandenburg ruler's costly displeasure. This episode reveals the spirit of resistance that characterized the fortress and its occupants.
