Schloss Bürgeln, Baroque castle in Schliengen, Germany
Schloss Bürgeln is a Baroque castle sitting on a forested hill above the village of Obereggenen in the Markgräflerland region, with a two-story facade topped by a central gabled tower with a clock. The building was completed in 1762 and features Rococo stucco decoration throughout the interior.
The site was transferred to St. Blasien monastery in 1125 by Werner von Kaltenbach, who gave his property to the monks to establish a settlement on the hill. The current building replaced the medieval structures in the 18th century, when the monastery commissioned a new residence in the Baroque style.
The chapel on the north side of the building was once the religious center of the monastic community and is still open to visitors today. Those who step inside will notice the fine Rococo stucco work that sets it apart from a typical country chapel.
The castle sits on a hill and is reached by a path through the forest, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before setting off. It is worth checking in advance whether any events are scheduled, as they can change how the site is accessed on the day.
On a clear winter day, the terrace is said to offer a view of the snowy peaks of the Bernese Alps, even though they lie far into Switzerland. The same terrace also frames the Rhine Valley on one side and the Vosges mountains on the other, making it a rare spot where three different landscapes align.
