Schloss Bürgeln

Schloss Bürgeln is a Baroque castle perched on a forested hill above Obereggenen, featuring a two-story facade with a central gable topped by a clock. The building was completed in 1762 under architect Anton Bagnato with elaborate Rococo stucco decoration throughout.

The site's history began in 1125 when Werner von Kaltenbach transferred his property to St. Blasien monastery, which then established a monastic settlement on the hill. From this monastic foundation, the current castle structure developed over subsequent centuries.

The chapel integrated into the north side of the building served as the spiritual center of the monastery and remains a quiet place for reflection. Visitors today can sense the religious purpose that shaped life here for centuries.

Access to the castle involves a walking path through the forest, so sturdy shoes and time for the climb are necessary. Check ahead about special events, as these can affect regular visiting conditions.

The castle terrace offers views across the Rhine Valley, the Vosges mountains, and on clear winter evenings, the distant peaks of the Bernese Alps. This far-reaching vista makes the location special for observing the surrounding landscape.
