Schloss Diepenbrock, Medieval moated castle in Bocholt, Germany
Schloss Diepenbrock is a rectangular manor house sitting on a small island, surrounded by water-filled moats. The building preserves features from different periods and has been restored and made accessible since the 1970s.
The castle was first mentioned in 1326 and served as a seat for a noble family for centuries. Its current appearance developed through renovations in later periods, especially during the Rococo era.
The name comes from an old Westphalian word describing the marshy terrain around it. Inside, Rococo details show how the residents lived and decorated their spaces according to their tastes.
The site sits on an island and is surrounded by paths that invite exploration. Visitors should note that access and opening times may vary depending on the season and special events.
The castle park holds unusual trees like tulip trees and giant sequoias alongside native species. These rare specimens show the interest earlier generations had in exotic plants.
