Schloss Droyßig, Cultural heritage castle in Droyßig, Germany.
Schloss Droyßig is a medieval castle in the town of Droyßig, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, set on a hill above the Zeitz Forest. It has a double ring of walls, six semicircular towers, a central keep, and a water-filled moat running around its perimeter.
The castle was built in the early 13th century at a road junction that made it a useful point of control in the region. Over the following centuries it was modified in the Renaissance style, with the most notable changes taking place in the 17th century.
The castle today houses a library and a registry office where locals come for everyday services. Seasonal markets held in the courtyard draw people from nearby villages throughout the year.
The castle grounds are easy to explore on foot, and the surrounding area is well suited for a short walk. Nearby hiking paths lead toward Haynsburg Castle and the Breitenbach forest, making it a good starting point for a half-day outing.
A brown bear enclosure has been part of the castle grounds since 1870, which makes it one of the oldest of its kind in the region. Visitors can watch the animals from close range while standing just a few steps from the old stone walls.
