Schloss Egg

Schloss Egg is a castle in the village of Bernried in Deggendorf, Bavaria, featuring a prominent tower and several grand halls such as the Mirror Hall and red and blue reception rooms. The complex includes buildings arranged around a courtyard adorned with two fountains.

The castle began as a medieval residence for the family of Thiemo de Ekke and was gradually expanded and rebuilt over many centuries. A major renovation in the 19th century significantly altered its appearance and interior spaces.

The rooms in the castle have been used for gatherings and celebrations over the centuries, and you can see today how different halls were designed for various occasions. The furnishings tell the story of how people lived in a noble manor.

The castle can be visited during the summer months, but opening times are limited and it is best to check in advance when guides are available. Access is on foot through the village of Bernried, and you should be prepared for varying weather conditions.

Stone for the castle came from a local quarry, and a portion of the material was marked with a special inscription commemorating the workers who labored there. This crafted mark still reveals today the story of the labor invested in constructing the building.
