Schloss Eichicht, Medieval castle in Kaulsdorf, Germany
Schloss Eichicht is a medieval castle in Kaulsdorf, Thuringia, set on a steep rocky spur between the Loquitz and Saale rivers. The complex consists of a main building and several smaller structures arranged in steps down the hillside.
The site was first mentioned in writing in 1331 under the Lords of Eichhicht. In the late 17th century the building was substantially rebuilt and took on its Baroque form.
The von Beulwitz family lived here for many generations, and their presence shaped how the rooms and spaces were arranged over time. Visitors who walk through the building today can still sense the feel of a lived-in noble residence rather than a purely ceremonial one.
The castle is reached on foot from the lower village, but the steep climb calls for a reasonable level of physical ease. Since the property offers vacation rentals and hosts events, it is worth checking access conditions before you go.
One of the outbuildings was restored between 2020 and 2022 under strict heritage protection rules, which meant keeping as much of the original fabric as possible rather than rebuilding from scratch. The result is a rare case where modern work and old material sit side by side in a way that is still visible today.
