Schloss Gettenbach

Schloss Gettenbach, Heritage castle in Gründau, Germany

Schloss Gettenbach is a manor castle in Gründau built from quarry stone with two stories topped by a hipped roof and an octagonal bell turret featuring a clock. The structure displays classic features of regional noble architecture with its solid stone walls and formal proportions.

The building originated in 1377 as a forester's residence before undergoing significant restructuring in the 1600s when it became part of the Ysenburg estate. This transformation shaped its current form as a substantial noble residence.

The castle reflects hunting lodge traditions of German nobility with its three-winged courtyard layout and stone construction. The spatial arrangement visible today shows how the building once served the leisure activities of local aristocrats.

The castle now serves as the Margarete-Fischer-Bosch-Haus providing care services, so visitor access should be arranged in advance or is limited to certain areas. Located in Gründau, it is accessible by car or local transportation.

Between 1944 and 1957 the castle served as temporary quarters for the Orthopedic University Hospital Friedrichsheim during a critical period after the war. This unexpected use shows how the building was adapted to serve patients in urgent need.
