Schloss La Motte, Baroque château in Lebach, Germany
Schloss La Motte is a Baroque castle in Lebach with a gate building as the last surviving part of the original complex. This central structure with its carriageway shows the architecture that once formed the core of an extensive castle grounds.
The castle was built between 1707 and 1711 under Baron Johann Wilhelm Ludwig von Hagen, replacing an earlier fortress from around 1300. This transition from medieval times to the Baroque period marks an important shift in the place's story.
The von Hagen zur Motten family shaped Lebach for centuries and left their mark in the town's coat of arms, which still reflects their leadership today. The connection between the castle and local identity remains visible in such details that show the relationship between the noble house and the community.
The gate building still stands today as a residential house, while the rest of the castle grounds are used for farming. Visitors should note that the site is mostly private, so access is limited to viewing from outside.
An ancient yew tree on the former castle grounds, aged 700 to 1000 years, is among the oldest trees in Saarland. This silent witness likely stood at this location longer than the castle itself has existed.
