Langenstein Castle, Medieval castle and museum in Orsingen-Nenzingen, Germany
Langenstein Castle is a stone fortress set on raised ground in Orsingen-Nenzingen, in the south of Baden-Württemberg, with Renaissance features still visible on its outer walls. Inside, several rooms are arranged as exhibition spaces covering regional history and local customs, making it both a castle and a museum.
The castle was founded around 1100 as a defensive structure in the region. Over the following centuries it gradually shifted from a military building to a noble residence, eventually passing into the hands of the Swedish-German Douglas family.
The castle holds a Carnival Museum where visitors can see costumes, masks, and objects tied to local festive traditions. Walking through the rooms gives a real sense of how central these seasonal celebrations are to life in this part of southern Germany.
The main exhibition areas are accessible for wheelchair users, and guided tours are available in several languages. Allow enough time to visit both the indoor rooms and the grounds outside, as there is more to see than it may first appear.
The Douglas family still lives in the castle while part of it is open to the public as a museum. This makes it one of the rare places in Germany where visitors can walk through rooms that are, in a sense, still someone's home.
