Schloss Lierheim, Schloss in Deutschland
Schloss Lierheim is a medieval castle near Möttingen in Bavaria, built from stone with towers and a defensive wall surrounding the grounds. The structure shows typical medieval architecture with thick walls and narrow openings designed for both defense and living.
The castle was founded in the 12th century and served as the seat of the noble Lierheim family. It changed hands multiple times over the centuries, including ownership by the Counts of Oettingen and the German Order from 1740 onward, who undertook major renovations.
The castle is private and not open to visitors, but you can view the exterior while walking in the surrounding area. Free parking is available near the adjacent cemetery, from which you can easily reach the location.
Master builder Wolfgang Waldberger transformed the castle so thoroughly between 1579 and 1584 that little of the original medieval structure remains visible. The main gate still displays the coats of arms of former owner families, a testament to its long ownership history.
