Schiffswerft Laubegast

The Laubegast shipyard is a large repair facility on the Elbe riverbank in Dresden, with workshops, offices, and a restaurant occupying the industrial grounds. The site features massive halls and modern dry-dock facilities for vessel maintenance, reflecting its role as an active working shipyard.

The shipyard was established in 1897 and later relocated to its current location in Laubegast, developing into a major vessel construction and repair operation. In its early decades, the facility produced significant river steamships that served transportation routes across the region.

The site preserves boat repair techniques passed down through generations of workers in the region. You can observe craftspeople using traditional methods to maintain and fix river vessels that still navigate the Elbe.

The site is partially open to the public with guided tours and exhibitions that show how work happens here and its history. The best way to reach it is from the riverbank path along the Elbe, and visiting fits well with a riverside walk.

A new pavilion on the grounds uses green roofs and timber structures to blend industrial heritage with modern environmental design. This project shows how old working sites are being reimagined today with sustainability in mind.
