Sender Steinkimmen, Broadcasting tower in Großenkneten, Germany
Sender Steinkimmen is a broadcasting facility in Großenkneten with a 285-meter lattice tower that transmits radio and television signals across the region. The station serves the areas around Bremen and Oldenburg with digital broadcasting services.
An original steel tube mast of 298 meters was built in 1956 and was then Germany's tallest structure. A new lattice tower replaced it in 2017, with the former mast reduced to nine meters in height.
The transmitter distributes numerous television channels including ARD-NDR, NDR-NDS, and ZDF, along with multiple DAB+ radio packages throughout the region.
The transmitter is visible from surrounding roads and nearby areas, though the facility itself is not open to visitors. Exploring the nearby roads provides good views to appreciate the mast's scale against the landscape.
The original steel structure from 1956 broadcast West Germany's first television program and briefly held the title of the country's tallest building. Today only a nine-meter remainder hints at this significant history.
