Schlösschen Schönburg, Classical château in Hofgeismar, Germany.
Schlösschen Schönburg sits atop an artificial hill with symmetrical Classical design featuring large windows and refined architectural details throughout its interior spaces. The building displays the careful proportions and decorative elements typical of 18th-century German aristocratic residences.
Construction started in 1787 under architect Simon Louis du Ry for Landgrave Wilhelm IX and was completed by 1790. The building was renamed Schlösschen Schönburg in 1795, taking its name from the nearby ruins of Schöneberg Castle.
The original name Mont Cheri reflects the landgrave's French tastes, which appear throughout the interior design and furnishings. This reflects how European nobility of the era adopted foreign influences in their private retreats.
The building now functions as a conference center operated by the Evangelical Academy, hosting meetings and educational programs throughout the year. Visitors should check in advance about access since the venue is regularly booked for scheduled events.
The landgrave's bathroom inside the château retains its original furnishings and reveals the luxury and craftsmanship of the 18th century. This room offers rare glimpses into how the court nobility actually lived in their private spaces.
