IGS "Johann Wolfgang von Goethe"

The IGS Johann Wolfgang von Goethe occupies a former Dominican monastery built in Brick Gothic style, featuring red brick walls and characteristic vaulted ceilings. The complex combines medieval religious spaces with classrooms, specialized rooms, and administrative areas serving students across multiple grade levels.

Originally constructed as the Schwarzes Kloster, a Dominican monastery that played an important role in Wismar's religious and cultural development. Following the Reformation and several uses, it was eventually transformed into a school and now serves as a modern gymnasium.

The building preserves the Gothic features of its original monastery layout, now inhabited daily by students and teachers who move through its historic spaces. The rooms tell of their religious past while serving as modern learning environments.

The building sits centrally in Wismar and is easily reached by public transportation, with pedestrians able to discover its history while walking through the old town. Visitors should note that access may be limited during school hours, and while exterior photographs are possible, interior spaces are typically not open to tourists.

The monastery was a significant center for Dominican monks in the Middle Ages and contributed to spreading their teachings throughout the region. The continuity of education and community at this location spans more than 500 years, from monastic life to modern schooling.
