Sonnborner Eisenbahnbrücke, Railway bridge in Elberfeld, Germany.
Sonnborner Eisenbahnbrücke is a 19th-century arch bridge that crosses the Wupper Valley, Federal Highway 228, and the Siegfriedstrasse Bridge. It is built from stone and steel arches that connect railway lines on the eastern side of the city.
Construction began in 1840 as part of the Düsseldorf-Elberfeld railway line, designed by engineer Eduard Wiebe. It was an important project to support industrial development in the region through improved rail transport.
The bridge shapes the appearance of this Wuppertal district with its heavy steel structure, standing in stark contrast to the suspended railway system. It shows how different transportation methods from different eras coexist in the city.
The bridge still carries trains daily and is not accessible to pedestrians. The best views of its structure are from the surrounding streets and parks, where you can see the construction clearly.
The bridge is remarkable because it is the only railway bridge in Wuppertal that passes over the famous suspended railway system. This crossing shows the range of transport solutions the city developed throughout its history.
