St. Bartholomäus

St. Bartholomäus is a baroque church in Wilster with a distinctive onion dome and richly decorated exterior and interior spaces. The building holds over 900 people and ranks among the largest religious structures on Germany's west coast.

A fire destroyed the earlier religious building in 1738, after which master builder Johann Georg Schott designed a baroque replacement. The new temple rose during a period of artistic growth in northern Germany.

The Klapmeyer organ of 1741 shapes the interior and shows the skilled craftsmanship of that era. Visitors today can admire the detailed carvings and careful design of this instrument.

Visitors find the church at the Market Square in Wilster where orientation is straightforward. The main areas are accessible for people with mobility limitations.

The interior holds an extensive collection of objects from the baroque era that reflect 18th-century artistic understanding in northern Germany. These works owe their good condition partly to restoration work by organ builder Rowan West in 2011.
