St. Michael

St. Michael is a parish church in the St. Johann district of Saarbrücken with two prominent towers and sandstone walls in warm tones. The interior features a soaring barrel vault space and blends early modern design with Romanesque-inspired details throughout.

The church was founded in 1923 when a design competition attracted 172 proposals, with young architect Hans Herkommer selected as the winner. His choice marked a turning point in the region's architectural identity during the interwar period.

The church is named after Archangel Michael and represented growing confidence in the local Catholic community during its creation. Visitors can sense today how this space functioned as a gathering place for the neighborhood.

The church is located in a central neighborhood district and is easily accessible on foot. The parish office makes available printed information and photographs documenting the building's history and design.

The church interior impresses with its exceptionally tall barrel vault that creates an open and airy space. This unusual spacious interior was a bold choice by the then 26-year-old architect that achieved a completely new spatial effect.
