St. Johannes, Gothic Revival church in Halle, Germany
St. Johannes is a Gothic Revival church built from red brick in Halle with three naves and narrow side aisles beneath a cross-ribbed vault. The interior space is divided across multiple levels by a three-story gallery.
The architect Friedrich Fahro designed the church in 1892 as a Gothic Revival house of worship for the growing community. It became the center of the Lutherplatz district, a neighborhood with cooperative housing that developed from 1910 onwards.
The choir windows display the four evangelists through symbolic representations in stained glass, created by a Hannover art institute. These glass paintings shape the interior and tell religious stories through colors and forms.
The church is centrally located in the Lutherplatz neighborhood and easily walkable from surrounding residential areas. Visitors should be prepared for the uneven lighting from the windows and the multi-level structure that makes the space complex to navigate.
During the East German period, the building served as storage until local Christians began restoration work in 1989. This chapter left deep marks and the church became a symbol of renewal after the political changes.
