St Remigius' Church, Bonn, Gothic church in central Bonn, Germany
St Remigius' Church is a Gothic building with three naves and a tall central section beneath a steep roof. Its cross-ribbed vaults from the early 14th century create an intricate pattern overhead throughout the interior.
Franciscan friars built the church in 1272 and dedicated it to Saint Louis of Toulouse in 1307. It was renamed after Saint Remigius in 1806.
Ludwig van Beethoven began his musical career at this church, substituting as organist for morning masses when he reached twelve years old.
The church is generally open during standard visiting hours and continues to serve the Catholic community and the university population. Visitors should be ready for an active religious space and respectful of any services happening.
The church holds a special connection to the Beethoven family, as Ludwig's parents married here in 1767 and the future composer was baptized within its walls in 1770. These ties give it a quiet importance in the city's musical heritage.
