Markt, square in Bonn, Germany
The Markt is a market square in central Bonn where daily vendors sell fresh produce, bread, cheese, flowers, and other goods. The triangular-shaped plaza is surrounded by historic buildings and has two main sections: a green market with fresh fruits and vegetables, and a street food area offering meals from around the world.
The square began in the 11th century as a trading place and developed over centuries into a center for markets and crafts. The Old Town Hall in Baroque style was built in the 18th century by Prince Clemens August, and an obelisk from the late 1700s was placed there as a thanksgiving monument.
The market is used daily by Bonn residents who come with bags and baskets to shop for fresh food and flowers. People meet friends here, exchange stories with vendors, and gather to eat together, making this space a center of community life.
The square is located in the city center next to the Old Town Hall and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. The market operates Monday through Saturday during daytime hours, and an underground parking garage beneath the plaza makes car visits convenient.
Sixty bronze books are engraved into the pavement of the market as a memorial to the book burnings during the Nazi era. Every year on May 10, a small wooden chest is pulled from the ground to remember this dark chapter in history.
