Metropol, Art Deco architectural monument in Bonn-Zentrum, Germany
The Metropol is a protected Art Deco building on the central marketplace of Bonn, currently used as a bookstore. Its facade shows clean geometric lines and decorative details typical of late 1920s design, while the interior has been adapted to its current use.
The building opened as a cinema on January 29, 1929, with seating for nearly 900 viewers. After decades of film screenings, it was converted into a bookstore in 2010 and its facade was placed under monument protection.
The name Metropol was common for large cinemas across European cities in the early 20th century. Today the building works as a bookstore, and visitors can walk through the interior while the protected facade keeps its original geometric ornaments in plain view.
The bookstore occupying the ground floor opens directly onto the marketplace and is easy to reach on foot from the center of Bonn. An integrated cafe inside offers seating where you can take a break and look around at the original interior details.
The original theater organ was removed in 2009 and is now kept in a music museum in Rüdesheim am Rhein. Instruments like this were used to accompany silent films with live music, which makes them a rare trace of how early cinema actually sounded.
