Metropol, Art Deco architectural monument in Bonn-Zentrum, Germany
The Metropol building at Bonner Marktplatz 24 displays the clean lines and elegant details of Art Deco design from the 1920s. The ground floor and upper levels feature refined geometric patterns and quality materials that remain visible today.
The building opened as a cinema on January 29, 1929, with seating for 864 viewers and an impressive theater organ. After decades of film screenings, it was converted to a bookstore in 2010 while its historic facade received protected monument status.
The name reflects a cinema type common across Europe during the early 20th century. Today, visitors use the interior as a bookstore and reading space, while the protected facade tells of its original purpose.
The bookstore on the ground level is easily accessible from the marketplace and offers different areas for browsing and sitting. The integrated cafe inside is a good place to rest while admiring the original architecture around you.
The original theater organ was removed in 2009 and now resides in a music museum in Rudesheim am Rhein. This musical instrument is a rare example of the technical sophistication of entertainment equipment from that era.
