St. Georg

St. Georg is a neoclassical church in Bensheim featuring a symmetrical western tower and classical architectural elements on its facade and interior. The building houses a Johannes Klais organ from 1963 with 41 registers across three manuals and pedals.

The original building was constructed in 1830 following designs by architect Georg Moller for the growing city. Severe bombing in 1945 caused major damage, but reconstruction efforts began in 1949.

The church has been the oldest Catholic parish building in Bensheim since its construction and continues to anchor the city's religious life. Visitors can attend services on weekends and hear the organ during concerts throughout the year.

The church is generally accessible during daylight hours and service times, with regular masses held at scheduled times. Visiting during an organ concert offers excellent acoustics and a rewarding experience of the interior space.

Historical records suggest that a church at this location was donated to Lorsch Monastery as far back as 818, centuries before the current neoclassical structure was built. This indicates the site has held religious significance for more than 1200 years.
