St. Mariä Empfängnis, Gothic Revival church in Stadtmitte, Düsseldorf, Germany.
St. Mariä Empfängnis is a Gothic Revival church in Düsseldorf's old town featuring a distinctive double-tower facade and a three-nave basilica layout. The structure functions as a chapel under the neighboring St. Lambertus parish within the Archdiocese of Cologne.
Construction began in 1894 under architect Ludwig Becker and the building was consecrated on November 15, 1896. The five bells were cast in the same year at a foundry in Metz.
The church bears the name of the Immaculate Conception, reflecting a Catholic devotional tradition. Visitors experience the interior as a space for prayer and contemplation, where the historic bells create a distinctive sound.
The church is generally accessible during daytime hours, though it is worth checking specific opening times beforehand. The interior can feel tight in places, so it helps to move thoughtfully through the space and respect anyone praying.
The building was among the first churches in Düsseldorf to install complete electrical lighting when it opened, representing an early embrace of technological advancement. This technical innovation set it apart from other houses of worship in the city at that time.
