Dompfarrkirche St. Ulrich, Gothic church near Regensburg Cathedral, Germany
Dompfarrkirche St. Ulrich is a Gothic church with high vaulted ceilings, pointed arches, and large windows that flood the interior with light. The building displays typical medieval architecture with refined structural details and open spatial proportions.
The building was constructed between 1220 and 1230 as a ducal palace chapel and became the cathedral parish church around 1240. This transition marked its shift from a private to a public religious site.
The walls display detailed paintings from 1571 featuring leaf patterns, flowers, Apostle figures, and biblical scenes that make the interior feel like an open storybook.
The museum section is currently undergoing restoration, but special exhibitions and guided tours continue to operate. Visitors should check in advance which areas are accessible and when guided tours are scheduled.
The building houses modern stained glass windows by artist Markus Lüpertz installed in 2023 that create a contemporary contrast with the medieval structure. These new windows demonstrate how historic spaces remain alive through contemporary artistic contributions.
