Keramion, Ceramics museum in Frechen, Germany.
Keramion is a ceramics museum housed in a distinctive circular building with a roof design inspired by the potter's wheel. The space displays over 5000 ceramic pieces by approximately 500 artists from roughly 35 countries, offering visitors a broad survey of ceramic art from different cultures and time periods.
The museum was founded in 1971 with financial support from the Cremer & Breuer group. In 2002, the institution merged its private collection with the city's historical ceramic holdings to create a unified museum.
The permanent exhibition showcases Rhine ceramics from Frechen, including the distinctive Bartmann jugs with their characteristic facial features molded into the clay. These objects reflect the city's long pottery-making tradition and reveal how local craftspeople worked over centuries.
The building features elevators and ramps throughout, making all areas accessible to visitors with mobility needs. Plan to spend adequate time here, as the collection is extensive and rewards careful exploration.
Every three years, the museum awards the Frechener Keramikpreis to emerging ceramic artists from around the world. This prize draws talented craftspeople to the city and reinforces Frechen's role as a place where ceramic art continues to evolve.
