Travertinpark, Public park in Bad Cannstatt, Stuttgart, Germany
Travertinpark is a public park in Bad Cannstatt built on a former limestone quarry, featuring old extraction equipment, crane tracks, and railway rails integrated into green space. The industrial structures are embedded within the landscape, creating a blend of natural and built elements.
The site operated as a limestone quarry from the late 19th century until 2007, extracting travertine stone for construction projects across Germany. After closure, the grounds were transformed into a park preserving industrial monuments.
The park displays 14 stone columns commissioned by Berlin in 1936 for a monument that were never collected and remain as historical artifacts visible to visitors today.
The park is accessible via two transport stations: Kraftwerk Münster on line U14 or Bottroper Straße on line U12, both with short walking distances to the entrance. Paths throughout the site are clearly marked and easy to navigate.
The site contains a natural pond below the former quarry level and serves as a protected habitat for wall lizards and sand lizards. These reptiles have adapted to the rocky terrain, making the park an unexpected sanctuary for these species.
