Bitburg Reservoir, reservoir in Germany
Bitburg Reservoir is a body of water near Biersdorf in Rhineland-Palatinate, set in a valley surrounded by rolling countryside. Flat paths run along the shoreline, making a full loop around the water accessible on foot.
The dam was built in the second half of the 20th century as part of a regional effort to manage water supply for nearby towns and farms. It still regulates the flow of the Kyll River, particularly during periods of heavy rain.
The reservoir takes its name from the nearby city of Bitburg and draws locals throughout the week. On warm days, families gather along the shore, walkers follow the flat paths, and anglers set up at the water's edge.
The site is easy to reach by car, with parking available close to the water. The paths along the shore are flat and free of major obstacles, and lighting on the trails makes an evening walk after sunset possible.
The site has a field archery course with targets set at different distances, which is not something you usually find at a reservoir. Carriage rides are also available around the lake, offering a slower way to see the surrounding countryside.
