Sternschanzenpark, Urban park in Sternschanze, Hamburg, Germany
Sternschanzenpark is a public park in Hamburg's Altona district, located on the border with the Schanzenviertel neighborhood. The terrain is gently hilly, with open lawns, tree-lined paths, and a small pond at the lower end of the grounds.
The site was built in 1866 as a military fortification, which is why the park's name includes the word Schanze, the German word for a defensive earthwork. When the military use ended, the city converted the land into a public green space for residents.
The park sits at the edge of the Schanzenviertel, a neighborhood known for its alternative scene and street art. On warm days, the lawn fills with people playing music, sharing food, and spending time together in an informal way.
The park is open from multiple sides and easy to reach on foot or by bike from the surrounding streets. Some of the paths on the hillside can get muddy after rain, so wearing sturdy footwear on wet days is a good idea.
The red brick water tower rising above the park's hill was once among the largest in Europe and now operates as a hotel. Guests sleep inside the former tank structure, which still dominates the skyline when viewed from the lower part of the park.
