Theater am Goetheplatz, Protected heritage theater in Bremen-Mitte, Germany.
Theater am Goetheplatz is an opera and theater house in the center of Bremen, standing directly on the square that shares its name. The stone facade carries Art Nouveau ornaments from the time of construction, including reliefs and decorative details worked into the outer surfaces of the building.
The house opened in 1913, replacing an older city theater that could no longer meet the demands of a growing city. During the Second World War the building was heavily damaged and had to be restored over the following years before performances could resume.
The name of the house refers to Goetheplatz, the square in front of the building, which is itself named after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Anyone attending a performance passes through a public space that was deliberately linked to German literary tradition.
The theater sits in the heart of the city center and can easily be reached on foot from most points in the downtown area. Several restaurants and cafes around Goetheplatz make it straightforward to plan a meal before or after a show.
Theater am Goetheplatz shares a joint ensemble with the neighboring Bremer Theater, now known as Theater Bremen, meaning that performers and crew regularly move between the two houses. This close link makes it possible to run productions at both venues at the same time, even though they stand only a short walk apart.
