Uebel & Gefährlich, nightclub in Hamburg, Germany
Uebel & Gefährlich is a music club housed in a former military bunker in Hamburg's Mitte district. The building has two main spaces: a large hall with a dance floor and a smaller room in the tower, with the complex accommodating up to 1000 people overall.
The origins trace back to a venue called J's that opened in the bunker in 1999 and quickly became popular for events. After closing in 2001, Tino Hanekamp opened Uebel & Gefährlich at the same location in 2006, reshaping the Hamburg music scene.
The name plays on the raw, industrial nature of the space that visitors immediately feel when entering the venue. The thick concrete walls and underground setting create a feeling distinctly different from typical clubs, drawing people into a singular atmosphere.
The venue is located on Heiligengeistfeld in an accessible area near public transportation and other venues. Visitors should know the interior is dimly lit and pathways between spaces can be narrow, so comfortable footwear and careful navigation are advisable.
The building originates from a Flakturm IV, a large military fortress from an earlier era that holds a fascinating layer of Hamburg's past beneath today's dance floors. This historical foundation gives the club a tangible connection to another time that every visitor can feel through the massive concrete walls.
