Flakturm IV, Military bunker in Hamburg-Mitte, Germany
Flakturm IV is a massive concrete structure at Heiligengeistfeld standing 39 meters tall with a square footprint measuring about 70 meters on each side. The building features an expansive rooftop garden containing thousands of plants and offering open green space for visitors.
The tower was built in 1942 to serve as an anti-aircraft installation and shelter during World War II. Its construction took approximately 300 days and became one of the defining military structures of the city's wartime period.
The building represents how Hamburg transforms military structures into spaces for nightlife and entertainment venues. Today it serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors experience music and cultural events.
The building is accessible to visitors daily through multiple access points and different areas to explore. The rooftop garden provides direct access to green spaces with good views over the neighborhood.
The tower originally held eight gun positions positioned high above the city as part of the air defense system during wartime. Today these former weapons stations stand as quiet remnants of the complex defense infrastructure that once protected the city.
