Wachsender Felsen

The Growing Rock is a tuff formation in Landau an der Isar that stretches about 35 meters and reaches up to 5 meters in height, with mineral-rich spring water continuously flowing over it. White and yellowish deposits coat the surface as calcium builds up visibly.

The geological formation has been known since at least the 16th century, appearing in an altar painting from 1520 at Usterling Church. That artwork depicts the baptism of Christ and includes the spring in its background.

The place is named "Growing Rock," reflecting the ongoing mineral buildup visible on its surface. Visitors can see how the water creates those pale layers that form over time.

The site lies directly along a cycling path next to the Isar River and is open year-round at no cost. Wear good shoes since the ground is often wet and slippery.

Mosses and algae play a crucial role in the mineral buildup, filtering water and helping deposits form layer by layer. This biological-geological process makes the site work in a way most people don't realize.
