Au station, S-Bahn station in Windeck, Germany
Au station is a protected heritage railway halt in the municipality of Windeck, Germany, served by a regional rail line. The 19th-century station building stands directly beside the tracks and defines the appearance of the small settlement of Au.
The halt opened in 1860 as part of a long-distance railway line built to connect the Bergisches Land with nearby economic centers. This rail link gave the previously isolated area around Windeck its first regular passenger and freight connections.
The station building dates from the 19th century and is listed as a protected monument, making it one of the few surviving examples of early railway architecture in the area. Visitors waiting on the platform can still see the original brickwork and the roof structure typical of that period.
The halt sits in a rural area, so it is worth checking train times in advance as services run less often than in a city. The platform is easy to reach on foot from the road, and parking is available nearby for those arriving by car.
Although Au itself is a very small settlement, the station once sat on one of the main freight transit routes between the Rhineland and eastern Germany. This role as a transit point is barely visible today, but it explains why a dedicated halt was built here at all.
